20 year-old Niya Esther Maman has been arrested and charged following the fatal crash reported over the weekend on Southwest Freeway.
The crash happened around 1:45 AM on July 19 in the 6000 block of Southwest Freeway.
HPD said a blue Acura RSX lost its front bumper while traveling northbound. The 27 year-old driver pulled onto the left shoulder and exited the vehicle to retrieve the bumper from the roadway while his 26 year-old female passenger remained inside.
Investigators said Maman was driving a gray Ford Mustang northbound when she grazed the Acura’s driver and crashed into the rear of the stopped vehicle. Both vehicles caught fire following the impact.
HFD pronounced the passenger inside the Acura deceased at the scene. Her identity is pending notification of family by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.
The Acura’s driver was transported to an area hospital with serious injuries.
HPD said Maman was not injured and was determined to be impaired. She was arrested and charged with intoxication manslaughter with a vehicle in the 180th Criminal District Court.
