BREAKING NEWS: TWO DECEASED FOLLOWING MAJOR CRASH ON EAST FREEWAY IN HOUSTON
Two people have lost their lives following a major crash on the East Freeway (I-10 East) eastbound near Monmouth.
According to preliminary information provided by Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, a red Ford Explorer and a white Jeep Wrangler were both traveling eastbound when the driver of the Explorer, who was reportedly driving recklessly and possibly at a high rate of speed, struck the rear of the Jeep.
The impact caused the Jeep to continue forward before coming to a stop in another lane. The driver of the Jeep suffered minor injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for evaluation.
The red Ford Explorer continued traveling after the collision, struck a barrier, and went down an embankment.
Tragically, both occupants of the Explorer, an adult male driver and an adult female passenger, were pronounced deceased at the scene.
Authorities stated that the East Freeway eastbound could remain shut down for another one to two hours as investigators work to process the extensive crash scene.
The Vehicular Crimes Division is conducting the investigation to determine exactly what led to the deadly collision.
Officials are also working to address traffic congestion ahead of rush hour and are encouraging motorists to use alternate routes while the investigation continues.
At this time, reckless driving and excessive speed are being investigated as possible contributing factors. The investigation remains ongoing.
