On July 17, Nhân Le was going about his morning in northwest Harris County when a stranger attacked him without warning and unprovoked. He was repeatedly struck in the head with a metal pipe. Nhân was rushed to HCA Houston Healthcare Northwest, where he remains in the intensive care unit. His family has been told that he will not recover. His life-support is scheduled to be withdrawn next Wednesday.
They are now living through the kind of pain no family should ever have to face.
Joshua McDaniel, 28, is accused of attacking Nhân with a metal pipe. He is also accused of attacking another man less than an hour earlier in the same area. That victim was hospitalized in critical condition.
McDaniel was charged in November 2025 with punching an elderly man in the face. He was released from jail on February 2, 2026, and sent to the Judge Ed Emmett Mental Health Diversion Center. The following day, the injury to an elderly case was dismissed after he was referred for mental health treatment.
Five months later, McDaniel has been arrested and is charged with the two brutal attacks.
McDaniel has 16 previous criminal charges and a history that included violent offenses. He was also previously convicted of robbery with bodily injury.
Nhân’s family deserves answers. What requirements did McDaniel complete before the elderly abuse case was dismissed? How long did he remain in treatment? What supervision, if any, followed his release? Were all required safeguards followed before he was allowed back into our community?
This victim’s family deserves answers.
Many people know Nhân from Klein Forest High School’s Class of 2012. His family and friends describe him as one of the kindest people anyone could meet. They said he was friendly, genuine, generous and always willing to help someone without expecting anything in return. This tragedy could’ve been prevented.

•Interesting that there was no mental health issues documented on any of his previous criminal charges
•There’s no documentation of him being declared incompetent to stand trial and restored to competency
•Nhan Le’s Family deserves answers and a thorough investigation as to how this insidious act could have happened.
