A 34-year-old Nacogdoches man, Kane Kellum, has been indicted on federal charges related to the sexual exploitation of a child. The investigation further uncovered additional criminal conduct, resulting in a state charge of Super Aggravated Sexual Assault of a Child.
On November 28, 2025, at approximately 2:00 a.m., officers with the Baytown Police Department responded to a residence regarding concerning material discovered on a cellphone. The initial investigation revealed the device contained artificial intelligence (AI)-generated images depicting known minors. Recognizing the complexity and emerging nature of AI-facilitated exploitation, a Baytown Police Department Crimes Against Children detective proactively referred the case to the FBI – Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for further investigation and potential federal prosecution.
As a result of the federal investigation, a grand jury returned indictments on four counts related to child sexual abuse material. Investigators allege the suspect utilized artificial intelligence applications to create exploitative images using photographs of a child he personally knew. The investigation also led to the discovery of additional related criminal activity. Based on those findings, Kane Kellum has been charged with Super Aggravated Sexual Assault of a Child.
Digital Forensics played a critical role in this case. Through detailed forensic analysis of electronic devices, investigators were able to identify the origin, manipulation, and storage of the illicit material. The technical expertise of digital forensic specialists was instrumental in advancing both the federal and state charges.
Baytown Police Chief John Stringer issued the following statement: “Crimes against children are among the most disturbing and serious offenses we investigate. This case demonstrates our department’s commitment to protecting the most vulnerable members of our community. As technology evolves, so do the tactics of those who seek to exploit it. We will continue to adapt, work alongside our federal partners, and utilize every available resource, including advanced digital forensics, to ensure offenders are held accountable.”
This case underscores the importance of interagency collaboration and proactive investigative work, particularly as offenders attempt to misuse emerging technologies. The Baytown Police Department remains committed to protecting children and aggressively pursuing those who seek to harm them.
