Bartlett Elementary in Conroe ISD.
According to a Hood News Peep, their 7-year-old son, a 2nd grader, was able to check out a controversial book from the school library. Bartlett Elementary serves PK through 4th grade students, and the parent is questioning how this book was ever chosen and approved for such young children.
A passage from the book in the picture below describes a young boy reflecting on being called gay in elementary school, later sharing intimate moments and mutual feelings with another boy. Parents are questioning why themes of sexuality and hidden relationships are being introduced in a book available to children as young as pre-K through 4th grade.
“This book is in our elementary school here in Conroe. My son, 7 years old and in 2nd grade, was allowed to check it out. This school is PK to 4th grade. How was this book selected by district officials and approved?! I wish we knew who in CISD is approving these library lists for new schools!”
Please see images below. I’ve also attached an email from the school in response to Mom’s email voicing her concern. The response explained that the library collection was chosen by district officials using approved guidelines, not by campus staff. They added that if parents find a book inappropriate, their child can return it, and the school will remove it from the shelves.
Please take time to check what your kids are checking out and reading, so you know exactly what’s being put in their hands. Even in elementary school libraries, some books contain controversial themes and subject matter that many parents may not be aware of.
