After a decade on the run, Carlos Mario Torres (38) has been arrested by the National Police of Nicaragua in Estelí, Nicaragua. He has been a wanted suspect for the 2014 murder of his ex-girlfriend, 22-year-old Eleivia Vigil in Houston. Torres has finally been captured after being placed on Interpol’s wanted list, and officials say he will face extradition to the U.S. to face his charge.
On June 22, 2014, Eleivia came home around 2 AM after a night out in Houston. The next morning, her family tried to check on her but couldn’t get into her room. Hours later, looking through her window, they realized something was wrong.
Investigators said the room smelled of bleach, her body was covered with a towel, and the scene appeared staged. An autopsy revealed she had died by strangulation.
Detectives investigated Torres, her on-again, off-again boyfriend, who admitted he had been with her that night but gave conflicting stories. By December 2014, an arrest warrant was issued, and Torres was taken into custody.
However, a judge granted him bond. After being released, Torres removed his ankle monitor and fled. The last confirmed sighting was on Valentine’s Day 2016, when he was seen driving a gold 2003 Nissan Xterra.
For years, he evaded capture… until this month, when Nicaraguan police working with Interpol and they located and arrested him. Officials confirm Torres is expected to be extradited back to Houston.
Our prayers go out to Eleivia’s family and friends. May there be justice for this family. Her light will always shine bright.
