John Araniva was sentenced today to 28 years in prison after accepting a plea deal in the murder of Indigo Garza.
The sentencing took place this morning at the Harris County Criminal Justice Center, 1201 Franklin, 17th Floor, Court 184, before Judge Katherine Thomas of the 184th District Court.
Araniva was charged with murder in the February 23, 2022 shooting that happened around 11:30 p.m. in the 300 block of Rosamond Street in Houston. Authorities say Araniva shot and killed Indigo Garza before fleeing the scene westbound on Rosamond.
He remained on the run for about two and a half years before he was eventually captured and taken into custody.
During today’s hearing, Indigo’s family delivered emotional victim impact statements.
Indigo’s mother spoke directly to Araniva in court, describing how beautiful, special, funny, and amazing Indigo was as a daughter. At one point she told him to look at her, but he never once looked up.
She also read a statement written by Indigo’s brother.
Indigo’s aunt then addressed the court and read a statement from herself and her husband, sharing special memories and moments they experienced with Indigo and the impact her loss has had on their family.
Another defendant in the case, Joel Francisco Rojas, is also scheduled to be sentenced in April. Rojas faces 5 to 40 years in prison and is charged with murder and tampering with evidence.
Our prayers and thoughts are with Indigo and her family. Nancy has fought for her daughter and will continue to do so, and she has also been support and strength for other parents of murdered children.
