Man Shot by HPD Officer After Allegedly Pointing Gun at Police During West Houston Chase

HPD is investigating an officer-involved shooting that happened this evening in west Houston.
According to HPD, officers were called around 6:44 PM to the 14300 block of Westheimer Road for a report of a suspicious person with a weapon. A caller told police that a man had pointed a weapon at him and his child. Officers arrived around 6:48 PM and located the suspect. Police said officers gave verbal commands for him to drop the weapon, but he ran. Officers chased him on foot, ending near the 2400 block of Briar View.
During the chase, HPD said the suspect pointed his weapon at officers multiple times. Police said officers also moved nearby citizens out of the way while continuing to give commands for the suspect to drop the weapon.
One officer discharged his weapon, striking the suspect. The suspect was taken to a local hospital and is listed in stable condition.
HPD said the officer who fired has been with the department for five years. The second officer, who has been in training for eight months, did not discharge his weapon.
As with all critical incidents, HPD said three investigations are underway: Internal Affairs, the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, and HPD’s Special Investigations Unit. Body-worn camera footage will be released within 30 days.
