In February 2024, Deputies with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office responded to a shooting where a suspect fired multiple rounds into an apartment, striking Carlos Fernandez. The 12-year-old child was pronounced deceased. Carlos spent his final moments trying to protect his family.
Homicide investigators identified the suspect as Rivera. He had previously been in a dating relationship with Carlos’s mother and shared two children with her. Investigators later recovered a gray pickup truck believed to have been used during the shooting.
Rivera was charged with Capital Murder and went on the run. During the investigation, Rivera’s mother, Alva Cornejo, was arrested and charged with the felony offense of Hindering Apprehension or Prosecution for assisting her son in evading law enforcement. The suspect was captured and taken into custody.
Our continued condolences go out to young Carlos family.
