A woman is deceased and an HPD Officer was transported to the hospital after authorities say a red pickup truck crashed into two police patrol cars that were blocking traffic on Highway 59 northbound near Cavalcade near the 610 North Loop.
According to preliminary information from authorities, officers were responding to a traffic hazard after a semi-truck spilled part of its load onto the roadway. If you look at the top picture, you can see a material on the ground. It was some sort of syrup and smelled very sweet. The officers were blocking traffic while the hazard was being addressed when the red pickup reportedly at a high rate of speed and crashed into the patrol cars.
According to HPD, there appeared to be very little braking before the impact.
One officer was transported to the hospital and is expected to be OK.
The red pickup was occupied by a female. She was pronounced deceased following the crash. Her identity has not been released at this time.
Authorities said they do not yet know whether intoxication or any other factor played a role.
The investigation remains ongoing.
