Jury Now Deliberating in Trial of Kristina Chambers

Houston, TX — The jury has begun deliberations in the trial of Kristina Chambers, who faces charges in connection with the tragic death of Joseph McMullin, a beloved member of the Hood News community. McMullin was killed in April 2023 when Chambers’ blue Porsche 911 Carrera crashed at high speed in Montrose.

Following closing arguments today, jurors in the 488th State District Court, presided over by Judge Matthew Peneguy, are now tasked with deciding between two possible charges: criminally negligent homicide or manslaughter.

If found guilty of criminally negligent homicide, Chambers faces 2 to 10 years in prison. A manslaughter conviction carries a broader punishment range — from probation up to 20 years in prison.

Trial Recap

Opening statements began Friday, and over the past two days, the court has heard testimony from several witnesses, including investigators from the Houston Police Department (HPD). Prosecutors detailed how Chambers was driving nearly 100 mph on Westheimer when she failed to maintain a single lane, struck a curb, and veered onto the sidewalk — fatally hitting McMullin, who was walking outside Voodoo Doughnut. The Porsche then continued into a nearby parking lot and collided with a pole.

Paramedics pronounced McMullin, 33, dead at the scene. Chambers and two passengers were taken to local hospitals before she was later booked into jail on April 24, 2023. Jurors also watched body camera footage showing Chambers’ condition at the hospital shortly after the crash.

Remembering Joseph

Loved ones describe Joseph as kind, compassionate, and proud of his Houston roots — “all about H-Town.” Friends and family filled the courtroom throughout the trial, showing unwavering support as they continue to honor his memory. One close friend shared during a court break that Joseph was a true Hood News Peep, known for his warmth, loyalty, and positive spirit.

As the jury deliberates, Joseph’s family and the Hood News community remain united, holding onto hope for justice and closure in a case that has deeply touched hearts across Houston.
