A drone operator is now facing federal charges after allegedly flying a drone in restricted airspace during FIFA World Cup events in Houston.
DPS posted that troopers on the ground spotted a drone flying where it wasn’t supposed to be and alerted DPS Air Operations. The drone climbed to about 900 feet before air crews were able to locate it and work with officers on the ground to identify the person operating it.
Officials say temporary flight restrictions are put in place around major events to help protect public safety, aircraft, and the large crowds attending. Ignoring those restrictions can result in serious consequences, including federal charges.
DPS is reminding drone operators to check FAA rules and any flight restrictions before taking off, especially around stadiums and large events.
