On December 1, 2024, deputies with Constable Mark Herman’s Office responded to a fatal crash in the 10900 block of Bammel North Houston Road. The suspected drunk driver, Joel Gonzalez Chacin, was arrested at the scene and charged with Intoxication Manslaughter. He remains in the Harris County Jail on a $150,000 bond set by the 232nd District Court.
The crash resulted in the death of a 7 year-old passenger, identified as Ivory Smith. Her mother, Christina Quainoo, sustained severe injuries and remains hospitalized. This tragedy has left the family devastated, mourning the loss of their beloved Ivory, who brought light and joy to those around her.
Family members are calling on the community to help seek justice for Ivory and they will be going to court today. They are also raising awareness to prevent future tragedies caused by drunk driving.
