44 Years Serving H-Town: The Legacy of Gallery Furniture

Gallery Furniture just marked its 44th anniversary—quite a journey for a business that began with $3,600, and a dream. Founded in 1981 by Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale and his wife, Linda, the Houston retailer has become one of America’s most recognizable furniture stores. But its true significance lies in becoming a symbol of American perseverance, generosity, and community service.

Built on American-Made Furniture

From day one, Jim and Linda McIngvale established Gallery Furniture around a straightforward yet ambitious concept: sell high-quality, American-made furniture with rapid delivery. That philosophy remains unchanged. Today, Gallery Furniture offers the nation’s largest selection of solid wood furniture crafted in the U.S., including meticulously handcrafted Amish pieces renowned for their exceptional quality.

The McIngvales’ commitment to American manufacturers wasn’t simply smart business—it was deeply personal. Supporting domestic jobs, creating furniture built to last, and treating customers with integrity and urgency have always been central to their mission.

Partners in Business and Life

While Jim has long been the brand’s public face—recognized for his enthusiasm, catchphrases, and media presence—Linda has been equally crucial behind the scenes. From managing operations and strategy to raising their family while helping grow a demanding business, Linda has been a steady, driving force behind Gallery Furniture’s success. Together, they’ve created more than just a store—they’ve built a legacy reflecting their shared values of faith, family, and hard work.

A Lifeline in Times of Crisis

That legacy extends far beyond showrooms and delivery vehicles. When Houston faces disaster, Gallery Furniture transforms into a sanctuary. During 2017’s Hurricane Harvey, Jim and Linda opened their stores to displaced families. They repeated this during Tropical Storm Imelda in 2019, and again during the deadly Texas freeze of 2021, welcoming those in need with shelter, warm meals, and comfort.

Most recently, following Hurricane Beryl in 2024, their doors swung open once more—no questions asked. This consistent pattern of stepping up during emergencies has established the McIngvales as true pillars of Houston’s community.

Giving Back From the Heart

Philanthropy forms the cornerstone of their lives. The McIngvales have championed countless causes, from education initiatives to mental health research. After their daughter’s struggle with obsessive-compulsive disorder, they helped establish the Peace of Mind Foundation to raise awareness and support other families facing similar challenges.

Their financial contributions also include millions to MD Anderson Cancer Center and ongoing support for innovative medical advancements like the BiVACOR artificial heart. Whether public or private, their giving has consistently focused on making meaningful impact.

Resilience in the Face of Loss

Over the years, Jim and Linda have weathered their share of hardships—business setbacks, public scrutiny, and serious health challenges. In 2024, Jim underwent major surgery after fighting a severe infection. Yet even during recovery, he returned to the store, greeting customers and working the floor. His passion for his business and community refuses to diminish, regardless of age or hardship.

A Trusted Voice in Houston

McIngvale has also leveraged his platform to speak out when others remain silent. After Hurricane Beryl, he publicly challenged CenterPoint Energy over widespread outages, advocating for Houston families still without power. Whether addressing civic issues, education, or disaster response, Jim and Linda have never hesitated to stand up for what they believe is right.

Moving Forward, Together

As Gallery Furniture enters its 44th year, it stands as a living testament to what happens when two people dedicate themselves to something greater than themselves. Jim and Linda McIngvale have created more than just a successful business—they’ve built a mission-driven, community-focused institution rooted in resilience, service, and love for their city.

And through every triumph and trial, they’ve done it side by side. That’s what makes Gallery Furniture more than just a store—it’s a Houston legend.
