For decades, the friendly face of El Panadero, the iconic statue welcoming customers to Aranda’s Bakery in Houston, had become a beloved symbol of the city’s culinary landscape. However, on Thanksgiving night 2023, El Panadero embarked on an unexpected adventure that captivated the hearts and minds of Houston and beyond.

Two individuals, captured on surveillance footage, stole the cherished statue and whisked it away on a Thanksgiving vacation to San Antonio. Their audacious act, however, took an unexpected turn when they documented their getaway on Instagram, sharing photos and videos of El Panadero’s “travels.” The posts, filled with humor and lightheartedness, garnered hundreds of thousands of views, quickly turning El Panadero’s kidnapping into a viral sensation.
