Man Sentenced to 16 Years in Indigo Garza Murder Case

Joel Rojas, who has been in custody for the past four years, was sentenced today to 16 years in the TDCJ for his role in the murder of Indigo Garza. The sentencing was handed down by Judge Katherine Thomas of the 184th District Court.

The case stems from the February 23, 2022, shooting that occurred around 11:30 PM in the 300 block of Rosamond St in North Houston.

During today’s hearing, Indigo’s family delivered emotional victim impact statements. Throughout their remarks, Rojas looked directly at Indigo’s mother, Nancy, and Indigo’s aunt Stephanie, acknowledging them as they spoke about the pain and heartbreak of losing Indigo.

After sentencing, Rojas apologized and said he was sorry, adding that he wished Indigo had been given a second chance as well.

Rojas faced a punishment range of 5 to 40 years in prison. Judge Katherine Thomas sentenced him to 16 years in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.

His co-defendant, John Araniva, the shooter, was previously sentenced in March to 28 years in prison.
